It is done!

We did three more interviews, took the XL2 for a spin through Humansdorp (despite the weather) and got some insane shots of Nico Malan High. Also: Cobus chased a cow.

I enjoyed the past week immensely. Playing around with a bunch of expensive equipment, learning a few more tricks of the trade and hanging out with a friend I’ve seen way too long ago was a welcome break from my studies. I’m writing this in Mosselbay, where I’m spending the night again, before heading out to Stellenbosch to slave over my thesis.

Starting next week I’m going to blog in Afrikaans again. I know most of you guys who have been reading for the past week won't understand a word of it (Google Analytics never lies), so before you leave this blog, never to return again, I offer these parting words: Thank you for reading!

I’m not very good with goodbyes, am I?

Cobus Potgieter documentary: Days 3 and 4

Today Jason arrived with additional lights, an XL2 and a plethora of other equipment and we started shooting interviews in a controlled environment. Cobus did a Cobus Live with Jason’s webcam; we also shot at the church where Cobus played drums for the very first time 7 years ago. Inbetween we devoured pizza and watched some more Discovery Channel (which, surprisingly, still had stuff to blow up). While I’m posting this, Cobus is interviewing his parents.

Yesterday consisted of location scouting, a bit of candid footage, scanning through Cobus’ baby pictures and editing a vlog, which is currently uploading to Youtube. (We burned through their internet cap yesterday and were left stranded without connectivity – hence the double post.)

What a day…

The cameras arrived early this morning. (Too early.) We charged the batteries, cleaned out the SD cards (of which we currently have 5 x 16GB) and set off to Jeffreysbay to shoot a ton of footage. I can’t, of course, reveal anything as of yet (Cobus is currently preparing a little surprise for his fans on my laptop), except that we shot a car guard named Willem who thinks Cobus is an excellent parker. (He really is.)

Back in Humansdorp we shot some indoor footage, messed around with one or two unrelated projects and dumped footage like crazy.

I’m reading FA van Jaarsveld’s Wie en wat is die Afrikaner?. We ate too much Macdonalds. Cobus played me some of the tracks he is considering for the DVD. The FS200 has an almost absurd zooming range. Forgetting to press record or screwing cameras on tripods the wrong way around isn’t cool. We saw a petrified dolphin. Cobus chased a seagull.

Tomorrow we’re heading into the wild (literally) for more footage.

Seeing as we are waiting for two sponsored Canon FS200’s to be couriered to Humansdorp (it should arrive within the next few hours) Cobus and I spent the day eating, planning and bonding. Eating consisted of, amongst others, a plethora of sandwiches. Planning involved scanning a few old photo’s and swapping out thoughts on random Humansdorpers (who, of course, we would like to interview). And then we played Quake and watching pro wrestling. Because we are men. Real men. Who bond with shotguns. Grr…
